  • DR CATH TACON

    DIRECTOR

    Cath is an Intensivist and Retrievalist who has been based in Cairns since 2013. She is passionate about critical care delivery in the developing world, having worked in PNG and been a member of AUSMAT deployments in Asia-Pacific during Covid and the measles outbreak in Samoa.

  • MRS GILLIAN TASSEL

    ACTING NURSE UNIT MANAGER

    Gill completed her Nursing training in St Vincents in Dublin. She moved to Australia in 2000 and has been working in ICU for nearly 20 years.

  • DR RAJ GOUD

    INTENSIVIST

    Raj is a Senior Intensivist and co- Supervisor of Training.

  • DR ALISON MAIN

    INTENSIVIST

    Alison loves flying and visiting remote parts of Australia. Having trained as an Intensivist and Retrievalist in NSW and Northern Territory she seen first-hand the impacts of remoteness on health both in the community and critical care settings. Alison is passionate about providing high quality ultrasound education and practice to the unit, and is a CICM ultrasound supervisor.

  • DR CRAIG MCDONALD

    INTENSIVIST

    Originating from Scotland, Craig completed his ICU training in Australia and moved to Cairns with his young family as a consultant. He has interests in research and education, and has recently been awarded a research grant from the hospital foundation.

  • DR MITCH CAMERON

    INTENSIVIST

    Mitch has been an intensivist in Cairns since 2019. He has interests in teaching, adult learning theory, and paediatric intensive care. In his downtime he enjoys time with his family and waterpolo.

  • DR PIP MCILROY

    INTENSIVIST

    Pip completed her ICU training in hospitals throughout NSW and Qld. She currently works both as an intensivist at Carins Hospital and as a retrievalist with the RFDS. She is the Donate Life medical specialist for Cairns. She is also an advocate for trainee wellbeing.

  • DR PIET WEEMAES

    INTENSIVIST

    Piet works as an Intensivist and Anaesthetist in Cairns. He is co-Supervisor of Training and has interests in nothing in particular at all.

  • DR RAHUL TAMBADE

    INTENSIVIST

    Rahul is an Anaesthetist and Intensivist from India, who moved to Australia in 2017, and has joined the Cairns ICU team in 2023. Rahul's life revolves around family, friends, food, fitness and photography

  • MS BELINDA MOREHEAD

    EXECUTIVE SUPPORT OFFICER

    Bel is the glue that holds the ICU together! She started in the unit in 2015 and now shares her time between the ICU, being a Mum to 3 young kids, travelling with her family and Pilates.

  • MRS NATALIE PHILLIPS

    EXECUTIVE SUPPORT OFFICER

    Natalie has been with Cairns Hospital and ICU since 2019 and feels most at home with all her colleagues and friends in the ICU. Natalie job shares with Belinda, as the Executive Support Officer. Prior to her career at the Cairns Hospital and Cairns Private Hospital, Natalie managed her family business Marine Discoveries (previously Reef Teach) specialising in Marine Education and Research. With a mixed heritage of South African, Swiss, and Greek, and a background in photography and travel, she also fell in love with the Great Barrier Reef when she moved to Cairns in 2008. She is an avid diver and loves to explore new places in the beautiful Cairns region and surrounds as well as spending time with her beloved pets, Harley and Sadie.

  • MS MICHELLE WHAP

    SENIOR PHYSIOTHERAPIST

    Michelle is a Senior Physiotherapist, and chairperson of the ICU/Surgical Queensland Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy Network in 2023. Michelle’s clinical experience in ICU Physiotherapy stems from Royal Perth Hospital ICU, Burns & Plastics & Trauma units, where she gained extensive experience in burns and trauma. Michelle’s other ICU special interests include trauma recovery and cancer care. Michelle established the Cancer Care Physiotherapy & Lymphoedema Service at Cairns Hospital. Michelle participates in research and education activities having published papers and presented at the state wide trauma forum. As a First Nations Torres Strait Islander, Michelle has intricate knowledge of cultural safety and healthcare provision for First Nations people in ICU.

  • Ms Amanda Keating

    SENIOR DIETICIAN

    Amanda has been hanging out in Cairns since 2017 after returning from working abroad, where she worked in a variety of Intensive Care Units across the UK

    She has special interests in critical care, gastrointestinal surgery and peri-operative nutrition support

    You'll find her anywhere outdoors, Far North Queensland boasts some of the most diverse and beautiful locations, most of which you can have all to yourself!

  • Ms Kathryn Charlesworth

    NURSE EDUCATOR

    Kathryn is an ICU Nurse Educator who completed her nursing science degree at JCU, and critical care post graduate qualifications at QUT in Brisbane. She has 18 years critical care experience, and also has experience in the paediatric and neonatal units. She manages the paediatric portfolio within the ICU.
